👋 Inspired by this article, below is a list of nuggets I’ve gathered about UX as a discipline as I continue to work in the field.
</aside>
- Fall in love with the process and everything else should follow.
- Always know what you’re doing, how you’re doing it, and why you’re doing it.
- Unless backed by quantitative data, user personas shouldn’t feature scales.
- Collaborate with developers early and often.
- Discover what your boundaries are when compromising on a design.
- 508 Compliance doesn’t have all the answers for ensuring an accessible design.
- Be careful. Data visualization can be prone to bias.
- Think of processes, artifacts, etc. as tools towards solutioning instead of tasks that need to get done.
- Listen to testers. Often they uncover things in production that might otherwise remain undiscovered.
- Problem strategy is weaving the story of big problems to smaller problems. People strategy is weaving different humans together. When combined, both inform consulting strategy.
- When designing for a user flow, ask yourself what if.
- Building trust with your users begins with simplicity.
- People range in different forms of ability, from the temporary to the permanent. This is important when designing for accessibility.
- When you first start out, you might find yourself defending different design decisions. As you move up the ranks, you might find yourself defending design as a discipline. Both have roots in solving user’s problems.
- Flexibility and approachability are integral to a collaborative mindset.
- You don’t need to have all the questions or answers now. Returning after a breath, taking time to chew, or marinating for a bit is sometimes all you need.
- The best research efforts are those that are holistic, both in its planning but also incorporating other teams.
- When liquid expectations meets constraints, it easily can feel stifling. Instead, view it as an opportunity to get creative.
- In the end of the day, we are building sandcastles.
